Scholarship Selection Criteria
Successful awardees demonstrate the ideals of the Loudoun Laurels: Commitment to Community and Leadership by Example.
- The CAMPUS and AVID programs, with input from their program teachers, provide the names of the top ten applicants to the scholarship selection committee. The ratio for each program is determined by the number of applications received by each program.
- Applications are assessed by the Loudoun Laurels Scholarship Selection Committee (LLSSC) based on the following criteria from the application documents:
-
- Commitment to Community. Does the student’s application detail service to their communit(ies)?
- Positive Attitude/Resilience. Does the student’s application demonstrate a “can-do” attitude?
- Demonstrate Leadership Potential. Has the student participated in a leadership role(s)?
- Defined Career Goals. Has the student explained their career goals?
- Need for a four-year degree. Do the student’s professional goals require a four-year degree?
- Financial Need. Review of the FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI)
- Evidence of Hard Work/Dedication. Does the student’s application reflect the efforts they have made to achieve? Awardees do not necessarily have the top grades and highest SATs.
- The student has not received significant funding from other sources.
- The student must attend a Virginia college, university, or community college.
- Interviews are conducted by two members of the LLSSC in person, over video-conferencing software or by phone based on the student’s preference. Committee members will ask students questions regarding their application and verify if the student plans to attend a Virginia school and has not received significant funding from other sources.
- The LLSSC will meet to review the applications and in-person interviews to determine by consensus which students embody the qualities of the Loudoun Laurels. This date will ideally occur before May 1, which is the last day students can commit to a school.
